Introduction to TGA Consulting Engineers LLP

TGA Consulting Engineers LLP offer professional design and monitoring services associated with Mechanical and Electrical Building Engineering Services throughout the UK from offices in Durham City and Stevenage, Hertfordshire.

The Practice was formed, in Durham, in 1962 as T G Armstrong and Partners and incorporated as a Limited Liability Partnership in 2007. TGA is wholly owned and managed by its Partners, who are individually involved in every commission. Our Durham Office is managed by Mike Waugh and Graeme Carr, whilst Stevenage is run by David Reynolds and Alex Maguire.

We currently employ 50 staff, all directly involved in the delivery of our building services consultancy role, with 20 staff in Stevenage and 30 in Durham. The latter represents the largest M&E design resource in the North East of England.

TGA enjoys a high level of staff retention with many of our staff having worked for the Practice for 10 years or longer. This enables us to retain experience derived from our project work and to build similarly long term relationships with our Clients.

We recognise the importance of staff training and development. The Practice was awarded Investors in People status in 2002 and maintains close links with the Building Services Engineering Course at the University of Northumbria and with North East Region of CIBSE. Generally, over 25% of our staff are involved in formal study or training at any one time. This includes the BEng degree course at Northumbria, initial studies leading to this course and post graduate qualifications.

This approach has built the Practice a reputation as an employer of choice within the industry enabling us to attract, develop and retain talented staff, to the benefit of our Clients and the business.

Our management structure, with direct day to day Partner involvement supported by Associates, enables TGA to be flexible and responsive. We aim to be early adopters of emerging technologies and encourage staff to develop technical specialisms and interests. Innovation is encouraged while experience and expertise are disseminated through internal forums to the mutual benefit of our younger engineers and their more experienced colleagues.

We recognise that while our role is essentially the application of engineering technologies within the built environment, success requires effective communication skills. Meeting our Clients' expectations first requires that we fully understand them. Our prospects of doing so are further enhanced by the manner in which our staff are able to integrate into diverse design teams and subsequently communicate with building and engineering contractors.

Sustainability, both in terms of our own practices and approach to business along with our input into Clients' projects is fundamental to our culture. Building Engineering Services are becoming an increasingly large proportion of many projects and consume substantial resources in their installation and operation. As designers we recognise and relish our role in delivering such projects in a manner which leaves Clients with well considered, optimised systems within their buildings.

Through our quality management system we seek to deliver an excellent service to our Clients and so procure repeat instructions and recommendations. We further aim to create and maintain a culture of continuous improvement of our methods and systems.

Through these approaches we endeavour to satisfy our Clients while offering our staff challenging and rewarding careers working on interesting projects in a supportive and invigorating environment.
