TGA Consulting Engineers LLP  were employed by University of Sunderland Edinburgh Building East Wing to form their new Gateway, housing all the student services within a single building

The total value for the refurbishment works associated with the Gateway project was in the region of £2.5 million, with mechanical and electrical services costing around £700,000.00.

The original building dated from the 1960s when Sunderland Polytechnic was first created and had been vacant prior to these works commencing. In conjunction with Faulkner Browns Architect TGA developed the design of this building to incorporate low energy natural ventilation, except for interview rooms (where privacy was paramount) and the new IT suite.

The design of this building contributed to the Carbon Trust awarding the University it's highest accolade in recognition of its efforts in energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction.

Computer modelling of the new glazed curtain walling and simulations of the working environment allowed TGA and Faulknerbrowns to work together to select glazing which not only exceeded Part L requirements for control of heat gains, but also provided a striking visual feature which contributed to the building being short-listed for various awards, including British Council of Offices and RIBA regional awards.

Following completion of this project, TGA assisted Reid Jubb Brown Architects in re-developing the courtyard facing Edinburgh Building and the Gateway.
