TGA Consulting Engineers LLP were employed by Newcastle University to
carry out the full mechanical and electrical services design for the
provision of teaching and research facilities in the Bedson Building. The project value was £2.4m with the M&E service value around
£1.1m.
Faulkner Browns were employed by the Client as Architect and
Lead Consultant. The project consisted of the remodelling of part of the ground and first
floor of the Bedson Building. The
ground floor works consisted of the provision of a Research laboratory
facility containing 32 variable volume low velocity fume cupboards,
LEV's and ventilated enclosures connected to 5 No. ganged fume
extract systems with flue discharge systems mounted at roof level. The facility also include a 35 person write up room, an instrumentation/analytical room with a dedicated instrumentation extract system a solvent store with ventilated cabinets and storage facilities. The first floor works consisted of the provision of a Teaching laboratory
containing 44 variable volume low velocity fume cupboards, LEV's and
ventilated enclosures connected to 6 No. ganged fume extract systems
with flue discharge systems mounted at roof level.
The facility also included an instrumentation/analytical room
with a dedicated instrumentation extract system, 2 No. technicians
preparation room, waste store and general store. The project also included the provision of a piped specialist gas system to all laboratory areas and analytical rooms and the replacement of 3 No. main air handling units to provide general supply (variable volume make up air) and extract air to the laboratory, write up and ancillary areas within the project. Fume cupboard/LEV containment test were carried out as part of the project works. |
